project description

Title: Sisters Rise
Format: DVD
Time: 9 minutes 30 seconds (00.09.30)

Summary: At only 16-21 years old, these young women are at the intersection between incarceration, poverty, and political awakening. Sisters Rise is a collaborative video ethnography which documents the thoughts and reflections of the young women in the Sisters Rising job training, political awareness, and wellness program at the Center for Young Women's Development, a women-operated San Francisco non-profit, and one of the leading feminist organizations in the United States. Sisters Rise takes a glimpse into the experiences of these young women of color-their healing processes, their visions for the world, and their hopes for their futures-and explores how the Center works for social change by supporting this growing community of young women of color living in extreme poverty, working in the underground street economy, returning from incarceration, or otherwise struggling with being 'caught up'  in foster care, probation, the California Youth Authority, the projects, or other branches of The System.
