grades
For the voyeur in all ye'all: my inspired pre-frosh co-labbers, my collegiate partnas, my radical self-educating students of the World peers, my distant family members, my #1 fan secret government agents, my Craigslist flirtees, identity management consultants, and the large community of asylum escapees and ideological detainees that is the World: I post my grades here for reasons like these: Because I hope it demystifies "college" for young folks who want to have a seriously gritty conversation about how it OFFERS and how it IMPOSES (my best reading recommendation on that subject being bell hooks' Teaching to transgress: Education as the practice of liberation). Also, because, I hope it gives everyone an opportunity to question the authority of marks made within an arbitrary and value-laden (not "neutral") bureaucratic system.
Do note: my would-have-been class (admitted Fall 2000) at University of California at Santa Cruz was the last one to operate on the "Narrative" evaluation system, which is too bad. As you can see below, they were pretty rich. Read up on the interesting (for hippies) history of the 1967 founding of UCSC here. Check out Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcyle Maintenance for a good inquiry into the value of letter grades.
